Spotlight Artist: Amy Black – “Whiskey and Wine”

Boston based singer/songwriter Amy Black possesses all the necessary traits of a soulful Southern artist: Her parents are from the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, her dad is a preacher, her granddad loved to tell stories, and the family moved around a lot within Missouri and Alabama before finally heading to Boston.

Several times a year Amy would return to her family’s Alabama hometown where her granddad, Thomas Reuben Jones, remained a core influence. “Man, did I love listening to him tell stories,” she remembers. “He grew up red-dirt poor in Waterloo, Alabama and put himself through college. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority for decades and then started his own business. His stories were so rich with detail and he loved telling them. He was a bit of a showman and I think he passed that on me.”

“Whiskey and Wine”, from her second full-length, One Time, depicts characters that ache with bittersweet yearning in a world of pleasure and pain. Black’s pure, powerful and haunting vocals evoke well-deserved comparisons to Rosanne Cash, Patty Griffin, Bonnie Raitt and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

On “Whiskey and Wine”, Black speaks to what it means to be human and alive when she sings, “I’ll take the pain for the pleasure you give/I’d rather feel something than nothing anyhow.”
